Dalcroze music pedagogy in elementary education

Did you know there are multiple ways to teach music in elementary school? Dalcroze is one of my favorites! The rhythm – one of my favorite words – is the best part.

The Dalcroze approach to music education is based on the simple but profound ideas of using rhythm, movement, and active listening as the foundations for learning music. This methodology engages students’ minds and bodies to internalize musical concepts in a multisensory way. While Dalcroze is a powerful tool for music instruction at all ages, it provides particular benefits for elementary students that extend well beyond the music classroom.

At its core, Dalcroze nurtures essential skills like listening, rhythm, coordination, and kinesthetic awareness that children can then apply to other academic areas. The rhythm training and movement exercises help develop focus, spatial awareness, and impulse control – all critical components of strong executive function needed for goal-directed behavior and learning. The Dalcroze approach can improve reading skills, likely due to how rhythmic training supports phonological awareness.

Dalcroze’s tactile and full-body learning aligns with best practices for teaching young students. The physicality reinforces understanding and memory encoding. Having students express musical rhythms by stepping, clapping, or improvising movement solidifies the concepts kinesthetically and aurally. This kinesthetic foundation can aid math, where step patterns represent numerical patterns or rhythmic counting supports arithmetic.

Perhaps most importantly, Dalcroze develops crucial listening abilities. Moving in response to hearing and internalizing rhythms and musical phrases heightens students’ sonic attention and perception. These finely-tuned listening skills have widespread applications, from following multi-step instructions to auditory processing in learning to read and speak fluently.

As an educational approach, Dalcroze meets elementary students at their developmental level while challenging them to grow intellectually, artistically, and kinesthetically. Its multisensory nature accommodates diverse learning styles and needs. Music teachers trained in this methodology can be invaluable partners in supporting core foundational skills that enable achievement across the curriculum. By incorporating elements of Dalcroze into music classes, educators provide students with tools for holistic learning to serve them throughout their academic journey.

I highly recommend Dalcroze Eurythmics available at Amazon for anyone who would like to incorporate Dalcroze in their music program.
