Lesson Plan (50-min): Rockin’ Grammar Grooves in 2nd grade

Here is a lesson plan that integrates music into the ELA curriculum for 2nd grade to teach standard English grammar and usage:

Standards Met:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1 – Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
National Core Arts Standards – Music: Responding – Anchor Standard #8 – Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.

Objective:
Students will be able to:

  • Identify and use correct grammar, including subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, and verb tenses in speaking and writing
  • Create rhythmic musical phrases to reinforce grammar concepts
  • Perform rhythmic grammar phrases with differing dynamics and tempos

Materials:

  • Examples of grammatically correct/incorrect sentences
  • Rhythm sticks or percussive instruments
  • Whiteboard or chart paper

Vocabulary:
Subject, verb, pronoun, grammar, phrase, tempo, dynamics

Engage (5 mins)

  • Play a lively song clip and have students pat/clap the beat
  • Discuss how music has rhythm, phrases, and expression

Introduce Grammar (10 mins)

  • Define subject, verb, pronoun; give examples
  • Present example grammatically correct/incorrect sentences
  • Students identify subjects, verbs, pronouns, and errors

Rhythmic Grammar (20 mins)

  • As a class, create 4-beat rhythmic phrases about grammar concepts (e.g. “Sub-ject verb a-gree”)
  • Divide class into groups to create additional phrases
  • Each group performs their phrase with different dynamics (loud/soft) and tempos

Perform & Assess (10 mins)

  • Student groups take turns performing created phrases
  • Class identifies grammar concept in each rhythmic phrase
  • Observe comprehension and rhythmic accuracy

Closing (5 mins)

  • Discuss how putting grammar to rhythms and performing helped learn concepts
  • Have students write 1-2 grammatically correct sentences
