Lesson Plan (45-min): Hip-hop Music in ELA

Here is a lesson plan designed for K-5 students:

Lesson Focus

  • Students will be able to perform rap lyrics with a steady beat

Lesson Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Lead students in clapping/tapping rhythms to an example rap song (like Pharrell Williams’ Happy)
  • Discuss how rhythm and beat make learning fun and engaging
  • Explain that hearing/feeling rhythms can help our brains get ready to read

Lesson Core (25 minutes)

  • Define nouns as “naming words” for people, places, things.
  • Provide examples.
  • Ask students find nouns in example lyrics
  • Define verbs as “action words”.
  • Give examples, including irregular verbs like run/ran.
  • Ask students find verbs in lyrics.
  • In pairs, have students compose 4 lines using given sentence stems like “I see [plural noun]” and “We will [verb]”.
  • Each pair performs their 4 lines with a steady beat and rhythm (choreography is optional).
  • Ask the class to identify nouns/verbs used.

Lesson Conclusion (10 minutes)

  • Have students peer assess performances.
